Who is Hailey Bieber, and Why Does She Care About Your Acid Mantle?

Hi guys! Today I’m going to introduce you to cosmetic brand elf’s billion-dollar baby, Hailey Bieber. Hailey is the gorgeous, lithe-limbed fixture you may have seen perpetually draped on husband-rapper Justin Bieber like so much gilded swag, but for my more inquisitive readers, who is this Hailey Bieber, really? Hailey is by birth a Baldwin, film actor Stephen Baldwin (“The Usual Suspects”) being her father, and the exotic Brazilian beauty Kennya Baldwin being her mother. One look at Hailey and it’s clear: this tawny-skinned, sloe-eyed beauty with brindled hair and exquisite DNA is one of the models in the cog of the wheel that is redefining the look and the finish of the skin now. It’s a new look, and as such, it requires learning some new vocabulary and discovering a few products and techniques which you will love. So read on! It involves donuts, and that’s something I think we can all get behind! Yum!

As I stated, Hailey, daughter of Stephen, wife of Justin, is very much her own person. Besides her devastating good looks, Hailey is a billionaire, or close to it I would imagine, now that she quietly wrapped a lucrative deal with elf cosmetics. This newsworthy acquisition made me wonder what her namesake brand, Rhode, was all about.

I have to share with you that as a licensed aesthetician, I was very interested in this particular celebrity beauty brand which was founded in 2022. The cult following of Rhode’s small yet mighty collection is impressive. The formulas and approach seem interesting. And the online praise had me so curious that I was, almost literally, forced to part with dollars in order to try and enjoy two products which I now consider necessary luxuries.

Necessary because they are seriously great accessory products to enhance an intelligent skin care regime; luxuries because they feel amazing and create that “glazed donut skin” that has been popularized by Hailey. And I don’t know about you, but I love the look. It’s such a welcome departure from dry, matte, chalky skin. That is just so last millennium. But getting that coveted glazed donut skin is not effortless, even though Hailey makes it look so. You may have heard of strobing — that is, adding flesh-toned shimmer to the cheekbones and other high points to achieve an appearance of radiance. Glazed donut skin transcends all that. It’s not of the “fake it ’til you make it” school of thought. It’s not about artifice, it’s about authenticity. You don’t *feign* a glow. You achieve one. It’s less makeup, more skincare. Glazed donut skin is the real deal, it’s about healthy skin and that requires a healthy acid mantle.

Seeing this void in the skincare industry, ie. — products that foster a healthy acid mantle — is precisely why Hailey, above and below, created Rhode (her middle name) with innovative cosmetic chemist Dr. Ron Robinson and New York whiz kid, Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali, dermatologist to Martha Stewart, among others. But back to the acid mantle. What is it, you may ask? It’s just a fancy term for what Hailey refers to as the skin barrier. The acid mantle is the healthy mixture of oil, perspiration and amino acids that prevents water loss and protects your skin from infection and damage. Stripping the acid mantle leads to dryness, dullness, uneven tone and texture, with flaky rough patches and inflammation, or even worse, it makes you vulnerable to skin diseases such as dermatitis, eczema, and rosacea. Not pretty.

Furthermore, your skin may sting upon application of products, and feel tight or uncomfortable after washing. Skin with a balanced acid mantle, on the other hand, feels pliable, looks radiant and dewey naturally, without the use of sparkling powders and other illuminating cosmetics. Like I said: less makeup, more skincare.

In developing her products Hailey and her partners really placed emphasis on that healthy acid mantle, and as an aesthetician I appreciate that. Rhode’s creed, “One of everything really good,” also spoke to me, leading me to try two products from the Rhode line. I chose these two products because they can enhance my skincare ritual without disrupting my current regime. And I absolutely loved both of them.

They really do deliver that glazed look of real, beautiful skin but I must say…brace yourself! They are different! One is a lightweight, milky lotion that you shake into your palms, just a couple drops at a time, and gently press into your face. It is, the sensational Glazing Milk.

With regard to sunscreen and/or makeup, the glazing milk you can use under or over, before or after, it doesn’t really matter. I’ve tried it every which way and it never disappoints. It really does pump up the glow, or the glaze, as Hailey calls it! I use it in the mornings and once or twice throughout the day.

The second product I tried is the Glazing Mist. Essential. Perfect hydration in a spray! I keep mine in the fridge. Super glazing effect on-the-go, great for your gym bag and helps repair and strengthen the skin’s barrier with ectoin and ceramides.

Both feel absolutely wonderful on the face. I’ve already ordered a couple of the clever stick pocket blushes which score points for portability…plus the formulas look amazing and are purported to deliver all-day color. Also a few of the peptide lip products, which make lip contouring a snap *and* contain more feel-good ingredients to improve the look of your skin both immediately, and over time!

This is the future of cosmetics, and the new look of skin. Thank you, Hailey, for caring about my acid mantle!
